Sh2-101 Tulip Nebula and Cygnus X-1

Sh2-101 Tulip Nebula LRHaGB | Avogadro Observatory
Created on: 9 Jun 2016 | Updated on: 9 Jun 2016

Obj. type: Nebula

Description:

Sharpless 101 (Sh2-101) is a H II region emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It is sometimes also called the Tulip Nebula because it appears to resemble the outline of a tulip when imaged photographically. It was catalogued by astronomer Stewart Sharpless in his 1959 catalog of nebulae. It lies at a distance of about 6,000 light-years (5.7×1016 km; 3.5×1016 mi) from Earth.

NGC 6791 Mystery Star Cluster has 3 different birthdays

NGC 6791 Mystery Star Cluster has 3 different birthdays
Created on: 6 Jun 2016 | Updated on: 25 Jan 2017

Obj. type: Open Cluster

Description:

NGC 6791 is an open star cluster in the Lyra constellation. It was discovered by Friedrich August Theodor Winnecke in 1853. At roughly 8 billion years old, and with an Iron to Hydrogen abundance ratio that is more than twice that of the Sun, it is one of the oldest and most metal-rich clusters in the Milky Way. This is contrary to the typical rule-of-thumb where older means more metal-poor. Compounded with the fact that it has an unusually high population of stars, NGC 6791 is among the most studied clusters in the sky.
